Map TW - New Zealand South IslandThis map covers the rail services in the South Island of New Zealand. The principal services are operated by Tranz Scenic. "The Tranz Coastal" operates a daily return trip between Christchurch and the ferry terminal at Picton. At Picton, the train connects with ferry services from Wellington in the North Island. Tranz Scenic also operate a daily return service called the TranzAlpine from Christchurch Westward over the mountains to Greymouth on the West Coast. This is a highly scenic journey - not to be missed! Two companies operate ferries across Cook Strait connecting the North and South islands. Interislander Ferries depart 3, 4 or 5 times daily for the three hour journey from Wellington in the North Island to Picton in the South Island. You can take your car on the ferries, or you can travel without a car and connect to passenger train services in both Wellington and Picton. Similarly, Bluebridge ferries operate twice per day between Wellington and Picton and return. There are also two independently operated tourist railway services operated in the South. From Dunedin you can travel on the Taieri Gorge railway to Pukerangi (or Middlemarch on Summer weekends), and from Kingston (except in Winter) you can take a leisurely ride to Fairlight on the Kingston Flyer.
