The State of Victoria, in the south-eastern corner of the Australian mainland, is comparatively compact by Australian standards. The State has a number of relatively large cities within easy travelling distance that are well connected by passenger trains.
The city of Melbourne and its suburbs out to 20-50km from the city centre are served by an extensive 17-line network of electric suburban trains. Melbourne's inner and middle suburbs are criss-crossed by electric trams run by Yarra Trams on the world's largest electric street tramway network.
VLine run longer distance passenger trains from Melbourne Southern Cross station to provincial cities across the State, with lines to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and Traralgon each having between 1 and 3 trins each hour. Eight lines extending beyond those major provincial cities get between 2 and 6 trains each day.
Fares on all Melbourne trains and trams, as well as on VLine trains in the myki zone (white background on this map) are covered by the myki stored value card system. You can buy and load credit on a myki card from any railway station in the myki zone and load credit. Then just touch on at the station before boarding and touch off when you leave the station at your destination. Beyond the myki zone, you must buy a ticket. You can buy a paper ticket at stations or you can buy e-tickets online. All travel state-wide on VLine trains and coaches as well as on Melbourne trains and trams, both inside and outside the myki zone, is capped at just $10.50 per day.
There are also two Interstate rail services to and from Victoria. NSW TrainLink run two daily XPT trains to and from Sydney. Journey Beyond run The Overland train twice weekly to and from Adelaide. These trains must by booked in advance and travel on these trains is not included in the myki system and are not covered by the Statewide daily fare cap.
There are also numerous tourist railways and tramways across the State. All these are shown on this map - including the world-famous Puffing Billy railway in the rainforest to the east of Melbourne.
