Map P2 - Western Australia
 |
This map covers the South-Western part of the State of Western Australia. The countryside is generally hot but arable crop land in the North, with cooler more hilly and forested land in the South. TransWA operate the major passenger trains in this area outside the Perth metropolitan area along two primary routes - Eastward from Perth to Northam, Merredin and Kalgoolie, and Southward from Perth to Pinjarra and Bunbury.

The Indian Pacific
Twice each week, Great Southern Railway's Indian Pacific train embarks on one of the World's epic rail journeys from Perth to Sydney. This transcontinental trip connects the Indian Ocean on the West coast with the Pacific Ocean on Australia's East coast - and calls in at Adelaide along the way for good measure. The journey takes about three days - so you have plenty of time to experience Australia's outback and famed Nullarbor Plain. You can make shorter journeys between Perth and Kalgoorlie too if you prefer. You can choose between Red Kangaroo class seating accommodation, and two classes of sleeping accommodation - Red Kangaroo and Gold Kangaroo.
Schedule: Every Sunday and Wednesday, the Indian Pacific departs East Perth terminal just before Midday, reaches Kalgoorlie in the evening, calls at Adelaide after two nights on board, and arrives in Sydney mid morning three days after departure. The return journey departs Sydney Central station mid afternoon every Wednesday and Saturday, calls at Adelaide mid afternoon the following day, gets to Kalgoorlie late evening the following day, and arrives at East Perth terminal every Tuesday and Saturday morning.

The Etmilyn Forest Tramway
Running between Dwellingup and Etmilyn just to the South of Perth is a unique tourist railway. The Hotham Valley railway operates regular tourist trains over one of the few remaining sections of WA's once common forest railways. On weekends you can enjoy a unique trip on the Etmilyn Forest train as it rumbles along from Dwellingup toward Etmilyn and return. Some services may be steam operated, but due to high fire danger trains are often diesel hauled instead.
Schedule: Each Saturday and Sunday the Forest Train departs Dwellingup at 11am and 2pm for Etmilyn and return. Services also operate on Public Holidays and every day during School Holidays.

The Pemberton Tramway
Twice each day you can ride the "Pemberton Tram" southward from Pemberton to Warren River. The journey takes you through rich forest country unique to this region of Western Australia. Indeed the railway owes its existence to the transportation needs of the timber industry it spawned. Today however the traffic is not forest products but travellers seeking to experience WA's majestic forests.
Schedule: Twice each day, at 10:45am and 2:00pm, the tram departs Pemberton for the one and three-quarter hour return journey southward to Warren River.
